Mişcarea mîinilor naşte o înţelegere a lumii: kinesis vs. techné.

NOTE:

(1) Techné

The set of principles, or rational method, involved in the production of an object or the accomplishment of an end; the knowledge of such principles or method; art. Techné resembles epistêmê in implying knowledge of principles, but differs in that its aim is making or doing, not disinterested understanding.

Techne, or techné, as distinguished from epistêmê, is etymologically derived from the Greek word τέχνη (Ancient Greek: [tékʰnɛː], Modern Greek [ˈtexni] ) which is often translated as craftsmanship, craft, or art. It is the rational method involved in producing an object or accomplishing a goal or objective. The means of this method is through art. Techné resembles epistêmê in the implication of knowledge of principles, although techné differs in that its intent is making or doing, as opposed to "disinterested understanding."

As one observer has argued, techné "was not concerned with the necessity and eternal a priori truths of the cosmos, nor with the a posteriori contingencies and exigencies of ethics and politics. [...] Moreover, this was a kind of knowledge associated with people who were bound to necessity. That is, techné was chiefly operative in the domestic sphere, in farming and slavery, and not in the free realm of the Greek polis."

Aristotle saw it as representative of the imperfection of human imitation of nature. For the ancient Greeks, it signified all the Mechanical Arts including medicine and music. The English aphorism, ‘gentlemen don’t work with their hands,’ is said to have originated in ancient Greece in relation to their cynical view on the arts. Due to this view, it was only fitted for the lower class while the upper class practiced the Liberal Arts of ‘free’ men (Dorter 1973).

Socrates also compliments techné only when it was used in the context of epistêmê. Epistêmê sometimes means knowing how to do something in a craft-like way. The craft-like knowledge is called a ‘technê’. It is most useful when the knowledge is practically applied, rather than theoretically or aesthetically applied. For the ancient Greeks, when techné appears as art, it is most often viewed negatively, whereas when used as a craftit is viewed positively: because a craft is the practical application of an art, rather than art as an end in itself. In The Republic, written by Plato, the knowledge of forms "is the indispensable basis for the philosophers' craft of ruling in the city" (Stanford 2003).

Techné is often used in philosophical discourse to distinguish from art (or poiesis). This use of the word also occurs in The Digital Humanities to differentiate between linear narrativepresentation of knowledge and dynamic presentation of knowledge, wherein techné represents the former and poiesis represents the latter.

(2) Kinesis (movement) and kinein (to move)

*Concept: ...Aristotle’s definition of kinesis utilises the concepts of dunamis and entelécheia: “The fulfilment [entelécheia] of what exists potentially [dunamis], in so far as it exists potentially [dunamis], is motion [kinesis]” (201a10). If (in its siple terms) kinesis is (in some sense), entelécheia, in what respect could kinesis be equated with Ross’s concept of an entelécheia wich is “that wich is always actually whatever it is”?

“The same thing, if it is of a certain kind, can be both potential [dunamis] and fully real [entelécheia], not indeed at the same time or not in the same respect, but e.g. potentially [dunamis] hot and actully [entelécheia] cold.” (Physics 201a10-22)

Ross comments: “For the most part Aristotle uses the words [entelécheia and energeia] as exact synonyms.” He explains elsewhere how this works: “Because the ergon [menaing “work or deed”, from en+ -erge- + -ia] is the telos [from en- + -tel-eche- + -ia]. ... the word energeia, wich is derived from ergon, tends to mean the same as entelécheia.

“The reason in turn why motion [kinesis] is thought to be idenfinite is that it cannot be classed simply as a potentiality [dunamis] or as an actuality [energeia] – a thing that ie merely capable [the dunamis sense], nor yet a thing that is actually [energeiai] of certain size [...], and motion [kinesis\ is thought to be a sort of actuality [energeia\ but inomplete [ateles], he reason for this view being that potential [dunamis] whose actuality [energeia] it is incomplete [ateles]. Tis is why it is hard to grasp what motion [kinesis] is. It is necessary to classify it with privation or with potentiality [dunamis] or with sheer actality [energeian], yet none of these seems possible. There remains than the suggested mose of definition, namely that it is a sort of actuality [energeia], or actuality [energeia] of the kind described [ateles?], hard to grasp, but not incapable of existing. ...Hence we can define motion [kinesis] as the fuflilment [entelécheia] of the moveable qua moveable. ...” (Physics 201b27-202a8)

Summerising the –ia discussion, it is not necessary to force aristotelian “entelechy’ out of its process element. The –ia suffix and the importance of kinesis in Aristotle’s definition of entelécheia suggest that process is a key element of Aristotelian entelechy. His three categories of kinesis-related existence may be understood as: a9 that wich is in the process of kinesis toward an end (entelécheia), b0 that wich has the potential of kinesis but wich is not now in the process (dunamis), and c) that wich is in the process of kinesis toward one end, but wich also has the potential of kinesis toward another end wich is not now in process.

„kinesis, like a taxis, is a movement or activity of a cell or an organism in response to a stimulus. However, unlike taxis, the response to the stimulus provided (such as gas exposure, light intensity or ambient temperature) is non-directional.”

(3) Tekton

*In Aristotelianism, as well as Kantianism, systematization of all knowledge (see also Kantian architectonics)

Lucrul cu etimologia a iscat în ultimele decenii o direcţie pe care Frampton (Studies in the Tectonic Culture – The Poetics of Construction in 19th and 20th Century Architecture, Cambridge/London, Graham Foundation/MIT Press, 1995) o plasează sub genericul unei definiţii din 1982 dată tectonicii de A. H. Borbein: “Tectonica devine arta îmbinărilor” (Kenneth Frampton, 1995, 5).

(4) Dynamis

In philosophy, Potentiality and Actuality are principles of an important dichotomy used extensively by Aristotle to analyze motion, causality, human ethics, and physiology in his Physics, Metaphysics, Ethics and work on the human psyche.

The concept of potentiality, in this context, generally refers to any "possibility" that a thing can be said to have. Aristotle did not consider all possibilities the same and emphasized the importance of those which will tend to become real of their own accord whenever the conditions are right and nothing stops them. Actuality, in contrast to potentiality, is the motion, change or activity which represents an exercise or fulfillment of a possibility, when a possibility becomes real in the fullest sense.

This dichotomy, in modified forms, remained very important into the middle ages, influencing the development of medieval theology in several ways. Going further into modern times, while the understanding of nature (and deity) implied by the dichotomy lost importance, the terminology has found new uses, developing indirectly from the old. This is most obvious in words like "energy" and "dynamic", but also in examples such as the biological concept of an "entelechy".

(5) Demiurgos

* Demiurgos – demiurga: meşter care plăsmuieste cu mîinile.

** Demiurgos: a concept from the Platonic, Middle Platonic, and Neoplatonic schools of philosophy for an artisan-like figure responsible for the fashioning and maintenance of the physical universe. The term was subsequently adopted by the Gnostics. Although a fashioner, the demiurge is not quite the creator figure in the familiar monotheistic sense; both the demiurge itself and the material from which the demiurge fashions the universe are considered either uncreated and eternal, or the product of some other being, depending on the system.

The word demiurge is a Latinized form of the Greek δημιουργός, dēmiourgos, literally "public worker", and which was originally a common noun meaning "craftsman" or "artisan". The philosophical usage and the proper noun derives from Plato's Timaeus, written circa 360 BCE, in which the demiurge is the organizer of the universe, rather than the creator of a physical substratum. This is accordingly the definition of the demiurge in the Platonic (ca. 310 BCE-90 BCE) and Middle Platonic (ca. 90 BCE-300 CE) philosophical traditions. In the various branches of the Neoplatonic school (third century onwards), the demiurge is the fashioner of the real, perceptible world, and of the Ideas, but (in most neoplatonic systems) is still not itself "the One". In the arch-dualist ideology of the various Gnostic systems, the material universe is evil while the non-material world is good. Accordingly, the demiurge is malevolent.

(6) Epistêmê

Epistêmê is the Greek word most often translated as knowledge, while technê is translated as either craft or art. These translations, however, may inappropriately harbor some of our contemporary assumptions about the relation between theory (the domain of ‘knowledge’) and practice (the concern of ‘craft’ or ‘art’). Outside of modern science, there is sometimes skepticism about the relevance of theory to practice because it is thought that theory is conducted at so great a remove from reality, the province of practice, that it can lose touch with it. In fact, at the level of practice, concrete experience might be all we need. And within science, theory strives for a value-free view of reality. As a consequence, scientific theory cannot tell us how things should be — the realm of ‘art’ or ‘craft’ . So we must turn elsewhere for answers to the profound, but still practical, questions about how we should live our lives. However, some of the features of this contemporary distinction between theory and practice are not found in the relation between epistêmê and technê. As we move chronologically from Xenophon to Plotinus, we go from an author who does not distinguish between the two terms, to an author who has little use for technê because it is so far from reality. It is in Aristotle that we find the basis for something like the modern opposition between epistêmê as pure theory and technê as practice. Yet even Aristotle refers to technê or craft as itself also epistêmê or knowledge because it is a practice grounded in an ‘account’ — something involving theoretical understanding. Plato — whose theory of forms seems an arch example of pure theoretical knowledge — nevertheless is fascinated by the idea of a kind of technê that is informed by knowledge of forms. In the Republic this knowledge is the indispensable basis for the philosophers' craft of ruling in the city. Picking up another theme in Plato's dialogues, the Stoics develop the idea that virtue is a kind of technê or craft of life, one that is based on an understanding of the universe. The relation, then, between epistêmê and technê in ancient philosophy offers an interesting contrast with our own notions about theory (pure knowledge) and (experience-based) practice. There is an intimate positive relationship between epistêmê and technê, as well as a fundamental contrast.

(7) Entelécheia

Entelechy, in Greek entelécheia, was coined by Aristotle and transliterated in Latin as entelechia. According to Sachs (1995), p. 245:

Aristotle invents the word by combining entelēs (complete, full-grown) with echein (= hexis, to be a certain way by the continuing effort of holding on in that condition), while at the same time punning on endelecheia (persistence) by inserting telos (completion). This is a three-ring circus of a word, at the heart of everything in Aristotle's thinking, including the definition of motion.
Sachs therefore proposed a complex neologism of his own, "being-at-work-staying-the-same". Another translation in recent years is "being-at-an-end" (which Sachs has also used).

Entelécheia, as can be seen by its derivation, is a kind of completeness, whereas "the end and completion of any genuine being is its being-at-work" (energeia). The entelécheia is a continuous being-at-work (energeia) when something is doing its complete "work". For this reason, the meanings of the two words converge, and they both depend upon the idea that every thing's "thinghood" is a kind of work, or in other words a specific way of being in motion. All things which exist now, and not just potentially, are beings-at-work, and all of them have a tendency towards being-at-work in a particular way which would be their proper and "complete" way.

Sachs explains the convergence of energeia and entelécheia as follows, and uses the word actuality to describe the overlap between them:

Just as energeia extends to entelécheia because it is the activity which makes a thing what it is, entelécheia extends to energeia because it is the end or perfection which has being only in, through, and during activity.

Demiurgos

/ text adunat de Răzvan Supuran

Dynamis

/ text adunat de Răzvan Supuran

Tekton

/ text adunat de Răzvan Supuran

Kinesis (movement) and kinein (to move)

/ text adunat de Răzvan Supuran

Techne

/ text adunat de Răzvan Supuran

Mişcarea mîinilor naşte o înţelegere a lumii: kinesis vs. techné.
